Bioware today confirmed the rumors that were circulating yesterday about an expansion. Called Dragon Age: Origins – Awakening , it takes place in Amaranthine and features new enemies, new abilities and spells, specializations and items. The player can either carry over an old character or create a new one – a Grey Warden from Orlais. There will also be five new companions to recruit, but it’s unclear whether the original  companions will still be available. The expansion also features an arch enemy in the person of the Architect, a character introduced in “The Calling”, a book written by David Gaider set about 20 years before the game.

This really damages our ideas… They’ve taken it outside the cannon… completely. This is going to be a post-game story, not a in-game or pre-game.

This is really going to hurt the work we’ve been doing thus far — in fact besides the part of having a child it seems that BioWare copied our entire storyline.

“Ferelden needs the grey wardens now more than ever, we must replentish our numbers!” ~ Alister (see their video… direct quote).

well I dont suppose that BioWare is copying your story… how the story would continue was more or less obvious in the first place… and I had the more or less same idea as you and Bioware had…

  4. Actually, I didn’t get that impression (that it’s the same as our storyline). It’s all about rebuilding the Grey Wardens of Ferelden since they were all but wiped out during the battle at Ostagar. And it introduces the Architect who is a key figure in the prequel book (The Calling). I imagine he will try to convince the PC to “end the blight” his way. So I really don’t see any similarity.

It looks to me that the focus of Awakening is fleshing out the direct myth of the Darkspawn- Creating the idea of an actual enemy, a thinking, evolving opposite organization rather than the implied ‘Force of Nature’ they were in the original. Whereas in The Rift we’re exploring the long term consequences of Morrigan’s Child or the PC’s own. Not even remotely similar.

True, and who says our game has to be “official.” It’s an “All-In-Fun-Experience-Gaining” Project by a group of people with a similar goal. I wouldn’t stress about it too much Mike. If people don’t see it that way, then eff them. They don’t have to play it.
